Get Paid to Write!- The No-Nonsense Guide to Freelance Writing (Culture Tools)

Cover of ISBN 1591810124Get Paid to Write!
The No-Nonsense Guide to Freelance Writing (Culture Tools):
Book by Thomas A. Williams. Sentient Publications 184 pages Paperback Published 2004-03-25. Description: Williams shares the trade secrets for defining the style and editorial slant of the publications you want to write for, crafting the all important query letter, finding good ideas for articles, structuring an article, selling information on the internet, and much, much more.
      • Review:: 'Do Not, I Repeat, Do Not Buy This Book Get Paid to Write by Tomas A. Williams is more about self-promotion than about providing information for individuals looking to make a living writing. This was the fourth book I've read about freelance writing and by far the worst. There was little relevant information and he spent most of the book promoting his past, current, and future works. It seemed every few pages he was inserting a plug about his website, an article or book he had written or some publishing he had done. I skimmed this book and was very disappointed. In my opinion Williams never provided enough information about the "how to" part of freelancing. He wrote more about the mechanics of writing. For example, he talked about what a good query was: it was well written. He did not go much beyond that explanation and there were no examples. He did, however, go into great detail about how to brainstorm which I found the most useless of all but the most detailed in the entire book. You can definitely tell Williams used to be a professor because he droned on without saying much of anything. If I could give this book a negative star I would. If you are looking for books about freelance writing, I would suggest The Renegade Writer by Linda Formichelli & Diana Burrell and Starting Your Career as a Freelance Writer by Moira Anderson Allen. Both of these books offer a wealth of information, especially if you are looking to break into magazine writing. Freelancing for Newspapers by Sue Fagalde Lick is another good book if you are interested in information about freelancing for newspapers. Save your money and buy one of these books.
      • Review:: 'A "must-have" for anyone contemplating a writing career Thomas A. Williams' Get Paid To Write: The No-Nonsense Guide To Freelance Writing is part of the rather consistently impressive Sentient Publications "The Culture Tools Series". An extremely practical self-starter career guide packed with tips, tricks, and techniques for selling articles to magazines, newspapers, and websites, or even writing a book, Get Paid To Write covers everything from the basic facts of freelance to learning what magazine editors want just from reading a copy, using the query system to one's advantage, success secrets, getting an agent if needed, dealing with the possibility of idea theft, writing especially for business, building one's professional reputation, and much more. A highly recommended "must-have" for anyone contemplating a writing career.
      • Review:: 'Essential Tools for Writers This book is an essential arrow in the quiver of any good writer. Freelance writers know that good writing is only half the equation, the other half is knowing what editors and readers want. Williams helps answer this question by calling on his years of real-world experience writing and editing magazines, newspapers and websites. Williams covers every aspect of freelance writing, from idea development to promotion, with thorough, useful advice. As an aspiring writer, I can personally say that this book is a must read for anyone hoping to be their own boss and make money writing. Competition can be stiff but Thomas Williams helps writer gain the edge they need to succeed.

      • Review:: 'Comedy Writing Secrets, 2nd Ed: The Best-Selling Book on How to Think Funny... - I had found this book first in my local library. In all spheres of my professional endeavours, this book has been a godsend. I had to get this book from Amazon because, months down the track, the library was wondering what had happened to their copy. - It is not just a hand-/text-book on writing 'funny', it is an instruction manual as deep and as robust as Carnegie's "How to Win Friends and Influence People", AND it's about the 'funnies', too. Learn and laugh, wince and chuckle, laugh and learn again. A wonderful textbook and a font of relevant, witty, and incisive observations about the 'why's and 'how's of people and their behaviour, and how to use their foibles to your advantage... "Oh Lord, we beseech thee, never let politicians find this book! (Amen)". - More effective, and a damn sight funnier than John Edward, Tony Robbins and Germaine Greer rolled into one - like Sun Tzu, but without the dignity.
      • Review:: 'You'll love it!... if you're 67 The reason there are no good books on comedy is because it is an inherently impossible field to "break down" and "explain." These guys do an okay job of relaying the history of comedy, but they do nothing to actually explain anything. Besides that fundamental flaw, these guys are simply too old and the book reads like my grandfather's "1001 Polish Jokes." This advice would have been pretty helpful is honing your standup routine for Ed Sullivan but in 2007 it just seems pathetic and lame.
      • Review:: 'Dated, but useful If you can get this book cheap, then I would recommend it simply for the fundamentals. However, it is a painful book to read; it is very old (1987) and, ahem, in some ways politically incorrect (but then again, everyone is so damn sensitive these days). I first read this book in 1989 - and it was useful. I picked it up again this year (2007) and realized two great lessons: 1) That some forms of comedy are classic and will always work. 2) That times change and humor does as well ... what might have worked for you two years ago may need to be reworked and changed around.
      • Review:: 'Well done This is a good book for anyone who wants to learn methods and concepts on comedy writing, or even how to construct material/jokes for their own personal life. This book is aimed toward people going into stand-up or comedy writing, but it is also very useful for people who just want to broaden their sense of humor. This book is broken down into different concepts and joke types, and each joke type is explained on how it is constructed. This book also has exercises on how to observe things differently, particularly how to "find the funny" in everyday things, and to take these observations and turn them into tools for laughter. I recommend this book to anyone entering the field of comedy, and also to people who would just like to expand their sense of humor. There are also some very good jokes inside! Very enjoyable read!
      • Review:: 'What other comedy books don't tell you And it's not because they are withholding the information either! Breaking down comedy into a scientific method is not an easy process. PLUS, there's a lot more to it than just understanding the core structure of comedy. With that being said, I think you'll find a lot of gems in this book that will make you funnier in your every day life. Not just for writing comedy, this book will help you be funnier in general in your interactions with your friends and co-workers. A lot of it deal with content. As this book was written for Comedy WRITING, it was written in mind that you cannot use your personality, way of acting as a shtick. So it relies heavily on the CONTENT... it's very potent, because communication is said to be over 90% body language. If this is true, and you learn (and you can) to be funny with the remaining 10%, IMAGINE... how funny you could be if you started working on your general ating shticks and personas. I've used this book to see how I could use it in my every day to be more interesting in general I think it will serve you well if that's what you're looking for.
